Jillian Segal’s outstanding report on antisemitism
Speaking with ABC NewsRadio last week, I discussed the release of Antisemitism Envoy Jillian Segal’s outstanding report, which includes a recommendation for all public institutions to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism.
It’s important to recognise what defines antisemitism. Adopting the IHRA definition does not (as some suggest) stifle free speech or limit legitimate debate. Criticism of Israeli government policy is entirely acceptable in a democratic society, and occurs both in Israel itself and in Australia.
However, that criticism crosses into antisemitism when it denies Israel’s right to exist or calls for its dismantling or destruction—language often used by extremists and activist groups under the guise of political discourse.
